How personal training courses can help me achieve better results

If you are interested in both learning for your own health and getting accredited or certified then a Personal Training Course can be the right choice for you. Giving you a base knowledge in a range of topics applicable to entering the Personal Trainer profession or commencing a Personal Training business, however if certification or working in the industry is not a goal then there are many resources that are available to you in order to learn and be empowered about your own health and fitness, one of the best sources may be right under your nose! Your own Personal Trainer let them know you want to be taught and educated not just trained and they should be able to provide you with information, tools and tasks personally relevant to you and direct you to further and more in depth information when you desire it.

For context I have been a Personal Trainer since the early 2000's and also an educator with years of experience in the fitness industry I have taught for a number of vocational institutions (including Australian Institute of Personal Trainers (AIPT), Australian Institute of Fitness (AIF) and Sage Institute of Fitness and I have seen and delivered many many iterations of the Cert III, Cert IV and Diploma of Fitness qualifications. I have also held key roles and taught continuing education at Crankit Fitness, Precor and I still hold roles at the Functional Training Institute and Rehab Trainer, I say all this so you know I am coming from a place of direct experience. If you are curious about how you can achieve better results, drop me a line!

How much should a personal trainer cost in Melbourne

Average costs for personal training in Melbourne are between $35-$100 per hour, when shopping around there are some things to take into consideration.

Return on Investment - often when we are purchasing in other areas of our life we look for great quality and a high Return On Investment (ROI), positively impacting our physical fitness, holistic health and wellness can bring you far reaching and very high value returns when the right timing, type and amount of exercise is prescribed at the right time.

This takes a certain level of experience, knowledge, skills and time from the Personal Trainer you entrust your investment with, making your decision solely based off the price will not lead you to the best returns.

Do they have general prices - Not everyone gets the best results with the same program, if you are looking for a great Personal Trainer chances are you are looking for at least some individual elements. As such once you have found a Personal Trainer that may be suitable for you, there should be an onboarding process for you to go through BEFORE they make recommendations on what from their services is most suitable for you.

Remember the price range above is the AVERAGE range and that there are both Below Average and Above Average personal training services outside of this range.

Do I need a Personal training gym

It depends :)

There are a number of reasons why investing in a great Personal Trainer (who is the right fit for you) can provide one of the best returning investments you'll ever make.

Most people want individualized attention of some sort to help with things like correct programming, exercise form, additional motivation, support and accountability but there may additional reasons such as;
  • A busy business leader with a full life who may simply want to switch off the brain when they workout.
  • An entrepreneur or high level professional who wants to ensure that their overall program is continually managed so they can perform at their best.
  • Someone who has been training for years but has constantly hit plateaus or is frustrated by injury.
  • They want to explore a new way of doing things after a long time of just doing what they know.
  • They have an event they want to prepare for and they need to lose extra weight, get stronger, faster or get more skilled at certain fitness components that will be required.
CALL AND SPEAK WITH A PERSONAL TRAINER

Here are some of the most common personal training questions

  • You're training but not seeing results on your own?

    You may not be losing stubborn weight or plateaued on your athletic performance. Here are some further examples of what a great personal trainer could do;

    1. Look at your history including current programming to make what you do more effective

    2. Focus on the right elements for you to get the results you desire sometimes the links are obvious and sometimes they require a more expert analysis but focus is a key component of success

    3. Work at the right intensities - Your Personal Trainer should help you work at the appropriate intensity regularly enough to help those results along. NOTE: This doesn't mean that every session needs to be flat on your back exhaustion, sometimes that is the exact opposite of what you need to get results

     4. Assess your goals to see how they have been mapped out and adjust your plan to achieve them accordingly

    5. Help you stay inspired and productive, everybody has great days and off days and days in between. Your Personal Trainer should be able to help coach you through these so you stay on track

    6. Help you get the results you expected not the results you got - sometimes results aren't the issue, it's whether you got the right results, your Personal Trainer is a great resource to help you get your strategy lined up with the results you want.

  • You're not sure how to start personal training (or restarting)

    It can seem very simple and very complex at the same time as a result confusion and overwhelm can reign stopping you in your tracks before you even get going. A great Personal Trainer can help you by;

    1. Design, set up, implement, adapt and optimise the various elements of your entire exercise schedule such as corrective exercise, cardio and strength training,  flexibility and recovery and even nutrition coaching leaving your mental bandwidth for other important areas of your life such as family, personal relationships, work and recreational hobbies

    2. Help you master the basics and progress to mastery a great Personal Trainer can help you progress in your knowledge, skills and application as your journey continues often the Personal Trainer -Client relationship can be one of the most rewarding and long-standing relationships people can have

    3. Help you maximise the positive impact of the time you spend training, reduce distractions, bolster lack lustre energy and ensure you are doing the right exercise at the right time with the right form at the right loading, tempo and duration

  • You are ready to be challenged with personal trainer (almost)

    Whether it be taking on more pushups than you ever thought you would do, taking on a Spartan Delta, running a Melbourne Marathon event or just hitting your next personal best, your personal trainer could.

  • You want to do more personal training by yourself

    It may seem counterintuitive at first but your personal trainer wants you to progress as much as you do. They spend their days helping people exercise every day and they love it when their client has earnt the right to do more involved or technical exercises.

Personal training support, accountability and Motivation

We all go through times when we need a hand or some additional support, you will likely see your Personal Trainer more than you see some of your friends it is only natural that they will end up being support for you in the tough times this may take the form of a listening ear and empathy or it may be some tough love to help you snap out of those down cycles.

Accountability also helps you stay on track, check in's through your online platform, in your private facebook group or even when you walk through the door on your next session. Your personal trainer will want to know if you did what was assigned, what went well, what challenged you and what was the outcome. These accountability checkins are key to peoples success in fitness.

Motivational tshirts and quotes are all good to get a bit of extra temporary drive but it is still extrinsic motivation, internal inspiration once tapped into leads to much more permanently powerful drive and a great Personal Trainer is also a wonderful motivator and coach, they take the time to get to know your personal drivers and then work with you to help you unleash it! If you are serious about taking action and getting results you need to be both emotionally AND financially invested so that it becomes skipping or flaking out on your workout or success work.

Having a scheduled appointment can also help you stick to it, it is a lot easier to put things off when it is just us but when other people are expecting us to be in a certain place at a certain time to do a certain activity it becomes a lot more actionable

What can Personal Training do if you have a physically health problem

If you have a health condition, injury or illness your Personal Trainer could very well be the hub of your health, fitness and holistic wellness.  They will see you more regularly than any other professional and they have the knowledge to (with your written permission) communicate  with your doctor, specialist, physio or other allied health practitioner to ensure you understand and are working in line with your treatment plan. If you are continually suffering from injury or movement dysfunctions that are resulting pain when exercising they can assess what may be occurring, help you ,mitigate that dysfunction and also refer you to your medical or allied health practitioner when required.  That's where an experienced trainer comes in. Personal trainers work with all kinds of people and many of them may have specialties that allow them to work with clients with special needs to varying degrees.

Just some things your trainer may be able to help you with:
  • Overall movement restoration
  • Exercising with arthritic conditions
  • Exercise with heart disease or cardiovascular conditions
  • Exercising with diabetes
  • Dealing with old or chronic injuries, aches and niggles
  • Helping overcome back or neck pain
  • Helping you to work on components that are essential to your activities of daily living  such as improving  your balance, core strength or stability
  • Helping you if you're pregnant, pre or post partum. Creating a program that works on what you need without risk of re-injury or other issues.

If you do suffer from these conditions ensure you get medical clearance or guidance prior to full commencement (or re-commencement) and give written permission for your medical professional to communicate with your Personal Trainer
